Mom Diaries: We Moved…and There’s a Raccoon in My Wall!

Yes, we moved. Not far, but we still needed boxes and bubble wrap. And let me tell you, we have so much stuff. It’s ironic, really—because as a kid, I used to love moving. Growing up as an Army brat, you develop a love-hate relationship with the whole process. Starting fresh in a new place was always exciting—rearranging your room, decluttering, and having a clean slate. But it was also bittersweet. I always found myself missing my “old life.”

Now, looking back on all the homes I’ve had the privilege of living in, and the countless schools I attended, I realize they’ve all become pieces of a beautiful puzzle that make up my story. This move, though, was by far the hardest. Okay, maybe tied with my first move at five years old, when I left Texas kicking and screaming… literally. I cried the day we drove into the driveway to check out the spec home we were considering. Maybe it was because the house was beautiful, maybe because I was four months pregnant and emotional. Probably, it was a little bit of both.

That house eventually became our home. It’s where I brought my daughter home, my first-ever house where I was allowed to paint the walls. It’s where I learned to cook, discovered my love for baking, and started hosting family gatherings. So many beautiful memories were made there.

Now, we're not too far away in our forever home—new memories, more love, and a whole lot of excitement. I can already imagine cousins running around, endless birthday parties, and holidays filled with joy. I can’t wait to see what this house brings.

One thing I’m definitely not excited about? The raccoon in my wall! Yep, there’s a raccoon (or maybe a bat, or a possum—honestly, I’m not sure what critters live around here in Western New York) in my wall. And it’s like he’s on a schedule because I only hear him on certain nights, when I can feel those little claws creeping through the wall. So, we’re going to have to figure out a critter-removal plan soon. If you see me out here trying to lasso a raccoon, just know I’m working on it.

But in all seriousness, I’m looking forward to slowing down, settling into this land, and learning new hobbies, crafts, and recipes. If you’ve got a good recipe or gardening tip, send it my way—I’m especially looking for gardening hacks. I need to start preparing now so I’m ready when the snow finally breaks.

Talk soon, friends!
